Standards for Mathematics Practice

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important "processes and proficiencies" with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The first of these are the NCTM process standards of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections. The second are the strands of mathematical proficiency specified in the National Research Council's report Adding It Up: adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding (comprehension of mathematical concepts, operations and relations), procedural fluency (skill in carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropriately), and productive disposition (habitual inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one's own efficacy).

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Graduation Requirement for Mathematics

  • All public high school students are required to meet statewide graduation requirements to earn a diploma. Specific graduation requirements exist for mathematics. The Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has amathematics graduation requirements websitethat informs families, students, and educators about those requirements.
  • In the Issaquah School District, all students are required to successfully complete three years of mathematics while attending high school (in grades 9-12). These three years are generally Common Core (CC) Algebra 1, Common Core (CC)Geometry, and Common Core (CC)Algebra 2. Some students may begin the high school sequence in CC Geometry or CC Algebra 2.
  • Other graduation requirements are outlined in each high school's course guide. (See links in Course Guides tababove.)

Which Algebra class is right for me?

Which Algebra class is for me? How are they different?

ISD offers up to 4 ways to meet the Algebra 1 graduation requirement. This document provides guidance to help students select the best approach for their learning needs.

Algebra 1, on its own. (Offered at all 3 comprehensive high schools)

Description

Distinction

Designed for…

This is your traditional Algebra 1 course, with standard pacing and approach.

This course meets the Algebra 1 graduation requirement.

  • Algebra 1 uses the ISD adopted standard textbook and digital tools

This course is for any student who doesn’t need additional support in Math.

Students who received a B- or above in 8th grade math typically are ready to take Algebra 1 without additional support.

Applied Algebra 1, on its own. (currently at Skyline High School only)

Description

Distinction

Designed for…

Applied algebra takes a different instructional approach to the same content as Algebra 1, with a focus on real-world context and hands-on labs.

This course meets the Algebra 1 graduation requirement, and meets a CTE credit requirement.

  • Uses the same standard Algebra 1 textbook and digital tools

  • Teacher focuses lessons on math in a real-life context

  • Hands-on labs are used to make the math more concrete

This course is designed for any student who is ready for Algebra 1 concepts and prefers learning math in a hands-on, real-life context. This approach may help students who have difficulty with abstract math concepts by regularly showing how the concepts apply in the real world.

Intensified Algebra (Offered at all 3 comprehensive high schools)

Description

Distinction

Designed for…

This is a 2-period block class that teaches the same content as Algebra 1, with a different curriculum, more review of concepts, a more visual – applied / concrete approach, and a pacing that provides more in-class support.

This course meets the Algebra 1 graduation requirement, and students receive 1 elective credit.

  • Students get the same teacher for 2 periods.

  • Learning activities and practice time is stretched over 2 periods.

  • Uses the Intensified Algebra Curriculum from Agile Mind.

  • Students use a workbook and a digital textbook

  • Increase use of digital animations to illustrate math concepts

  • Includes explicit instruction on how to learn math, based on brain research

This is a course for students who may have gaps or need reinforcement on content from CC7 or CC8.

Students who received a C or below in 8th grade math

and

who want additional supports, additional review of pre-algebra concepts,

and

prefer instruction paced over 2 periods, may want to consider Intensified Algebra.

Algebra 1, with an Algebra 1 lab. (Offered at all 3 comprehensive high schools)

Description

Distinction

Designed for…

This is your typical Algebra 1 course, with standard pacing and approach, paired with a second math class where typically another teacher provides additional math support.

This selection includes the Algebra 1 graduation requirement class and Algebra 1 lab counts as an elective.

  • Algebra 1 uses a standard text book and digital tools.

  • Lab class includes

  • Pre-teaching, re-teaching and additional feedback,

  • homework support,

  • help with developing high school study habits and

  • review of important pre-algebra concepts.

Students who received a C or below in 8th grade math

and

who want additional supports from (usually) a different teacher.
